The ruins of Cagsawa Church and Convent, with the panoramic Mayon Volcano as its backdrop, has become the trademark photo representing the Bicol region, particularly the province of Albay. And why not?! The place is, truly, a sight to behold. Going there will only take a few minutes from Legazpi Airport.
Around the vicinity of the ruins were accredited tour guides offering services without a fixed rate; meaning, you only give them some sort of "donations" in any amount that you can give. The tour guides in the ruins were also skilled to do "trick and creative camera shots," in which tourists of all ages find delightful and enjoyable. But more than all these, I find it inspiring and heartbreaking the historical drama behind the ruins.
INSPIRED
I was inspired, by the fact, that Bicolanos (local term for those living in the Bicol region) are resilient. And the Cagsawa Ruin is a testament to that resilience. More importantly, the ruin also served as a symbol of the Bicolanos unshakable faith and trust in the Creator.
HEART-BROKEN
The moment the tour guide mentioned of the casualties of the most destructive eruption of Mayon Volcano in recorded history, my heart bled.
According to the tour guide, there were thousands of people who were buried alive in the Cagsawa Church. It is because, during that time, the Church became the evacuation center for people who were affected by the Mayon Volcano eruption. But, little did they know that the Church will also suffer destruction. Until now, remains of those who died in that painful tragedy were still under the ruins.
