Our
paddle boat tour in the protected area of sabang mangroves is really
unexpected. This only came up as a suggestion from our tour guide so as
not to waste our time waiting in the long queue of tourists going to the
world-famous underground river (FYI: the sabang area serves as the
"gateway" to the underground river). We grabbed this opportunity of
exploring the area, since according to the guide, a very rich
biodiversity is thriving there. The tour costs around Php. 300 to 400
per person (forgot the exact amount) and inclusive of a boatman and an exclusive local guide. It is interesting to note that the paddle boat operation there is part of a community-based forest management efforts of the local government in collaboration with some non-governmental organizations. The locals there earn, while protecting the environment. They also earn, while educating the tourists about biodiversity and conservation.
Along the river cruise, there are plenty of animal species that can be observed living freely in their natural habitat. There are colorful birds of different species; species of lizards; monkeys, snakes and other aquatic organisms. Tourists are requested to minimize their voices so as not to disturb the daily routine of the animals.
Serving as HOME to these animals are the centuries-old mangroves which are very abundant in the place. The mangroves, according to scientists, also serve as natural barriers against storm surge and other related natural disturbances. It's very encouraging to know that a paradise, like the sabang mangroves, still exists in the Philippines. I hope and pray for the continuous success of the local government and its citizens in the preservation of this natural wonder.
